Employee Name Engraving Checker

Put each line of the plaque on its own row and set a limit of characters per line. The Service Year Awards checker counts every character, spaces included, and shows which lines are over. A count is not a fit test. Letter style, plate size and layout decide that, and only a proof at real size can confirm it.

Build your plan

Counts include spaces and punctuation. Character count cannot establish physical fit: font, script, layout, material and engraving area require a proof at actual size.

The decision behind a service recognition cycle

An employee moving to another office changes the packing destination, not the number of service awards. Keep eligibility approval with the program owner. Use one row per person and milestone, and separate the public inscription from confidential employment records.

Keep with your brief: Milestone eligibility, preferred name, dedication and receiving team.

This three-line inscription uses a 30-character editorial budget. The names and occasion are illustrative; edit them before using the wording in an actual request.

Understand what the result means

Visible characters per line, including spaces and punctuation; longest line compared with your chosen budget

A line marked within budget still needs a production proof. A narrow inscription area, a wide font, a logo beside the text or a different script can change the usable layout. Send the exact text together with the intended product and dimensions so those choices can be considered together.

What do you do when a hyphenated name runs over?

An HR assistant is preparing a Service Milestone Plaque for Maria-Fernanda Castellanos-Okafor, who reaches fifteen years. With a limit of twenty-eight characters, the full name counts thirty-three and fails. Shortening it is not her call. She asks the employee, who would rather keep every part of her name than see it trimmed. So the name goes on two lines: Maria-Fernanda at fourteen characters and Castellanos-Okafor at eighteen. Both pass. The milestone line, Fifteen Years of Service, counts twenty-four. The assistant sends the three lines to Service Year Awards and asks for the same two-line name layout to be offered to anyone else in the group who wants it.

Check these details before using the result

Trimming a name without asking
The employee decides how their name appears. Offer a second line or a wider plaque before suggesting any shortened form.
Testing the name but not the message
Personal messages vary most in length. Paste each one, since a manager's two-sentence note may need a larger tier.
Assuming numerals and words count alike
15 Years and Fifteen Years differ by five characters. Check the style your program actually uses.

Service Milestone Plaque

Use the same format across a service program and vary the milestone inscription. A five-year and a twenty-year award can belong to the same visual family while carrying different messages about the person's contribution.

Questions about this checker

How long can an employee's name be on a service plaque?

No fixed number applies, because plate width and letter size differ by design and tier. Use the checker to find your longest name, then tell Service Year Awards about it in the quote request. The layout is drawn around that name, and the proof shows how it sits before anything is engraved.

Do accents and special characters affect the count?

Each accented letter counts as one character, as does a hyphen or an apostrophe. The count stays the same, but the engraving must reproduce the mark correctly. Paste names exactly as the employee writes them, and look closely at those lines on the proof.

Which buying guide should you read next?

All buying guides
Building a recurring service-award reorder file

Separate the reusable service-award design from each cycle’s approved recipients, quantities and delivery allocations so a recurring order cannot replay stale personal data.

Designing long names into an employee award

Preserve the recipient’s approved full display name and adjust the design around it, using actual-size proofs rather than a character limit as a fit guarantee.

Employee photo plaques: separate photo holders or printed image panels

Choose whether the photograph should remain a separate replaceable component or part of the finished recognition artwork, with a clear image window, inscription area and update responsibility.

Five-year and ten-year award tiers compared

Choose a consistent award family, then give each approved service milestone a clear distinction in wording, presentation or design.
